This is an awesome video detailing several different bodyweight exercises. This video goes to show you don’t need a gym. You can build muscle and strength with all of these bodyweight exercises. This also shows proper form and technique and is a wonderfully produced video.

Lifting weights ( …
Lifting weights (thankfully) isn’t the only way to increase strength.
There are more …
There are more efficient ways to do this. I completely agree with a paleo diet, but even that needs to be modified for athletes. Paleo man couldn’t have competed in modern athletics although he was generally very fit. For most people these exercises are enough, but not for athletes training for sport. So I am not dissing “spartan” training per-say, only suggesting that we let sport science guide us and not give it a special status because under the guise that it’s somehow more “natural”.
The shortcoming of …
The shortcoming of bodyweight exercises is that one’s strength and hypertrophy gains quickly plateau as the rep range extends into the muscle endurance range. For people therefore looking for muscular endurance all of these exercises are great. Unfortunately only hypertrophy assists weight loss and that happens when muscular failure is produced in the 8-12 rep range. Likewise to improve one’s power from plyo the reps should be kept between 3-5 per set with a rest work rest interval of 1:4.

If your clients can’t do any of this then simply don’t any of this with them. Hopefully your knowledgeable enough to have an expansive inventory of exercises to work from that will be appropriate for them. Although your attitude leads me to believe that maybe you aren’t.
Generally speaking most of these exercises wouldn’t be used for people being trained but for fit people who want to work out on their own without a gym.

I’ve had quite a lot of comments from people who found the ideas useful! Some of the exercises I demonstrate aren’t even the full exercise (e.g. the handstand push-up). I would agree that these exercises might not be for people who are completely new to strength training. But for individuals who have been training for a while in the gym but are not sure how to train without machines etc, I think it’s ideal.

Hi Graphite,
I reckon you should read the stuff about Spartan Training. That goes all the way along the route you describe. Good Stuff. I am 60 and it is getting rid of my fat. If it can do that for me, it can do it for anyone.
