Sports Drinks that Keep it Cool with the Environment: Greenopia Ranks Them

This is a guest post by Ayana Meade from Greenopia

Whether you’re an energy-drink enjoyer, or sports-drink enthusiast, the research team at Greenopia, the green directory and rating website has checked out how your fave thirst-quencher scores on sustainability, eco-friendliness and health.

According to the guide, the following are the greenest beverages available in the sports drink category.  Steaz, which has some energy drink offerings and is made with organic and some fair trade ingredients, scored three leaves on the Greenopia EPA-recognized rating scale.  The only ingredient to be slightly cautious of is guarana (found in their energy drinks).  This stimulant is usually okay in moderation, but people with caffeine sensitivity should take care when consuming.  Blue Sky Organic Sodas and energy drinks scored two leaves. Great ingredient selection makes Blue Sky a green beverage company, but there is still some room for improvement for the rest of their production including packaging and green building design.  Coke Bottling scored one leaf for their initiatives surrounding fuel and energy.  Gatorade scored one leaf for their building design and production efforts.

This was an independent study conducted by Greenopia’s Research Staff using an extensive list of test criteria including beverage container, ingredient analysis including product toxicity, supply chain, sustainability reporting, green building design initiatives, and history of environmental violations.  The criteria data were gathered, calculated and analyzed using Greenopia’s proprietary lifecycle eco-cost methodology.  Each beverage tested earned a leaf rating from 1 (some green characteristics) to 4 leaves (pretty darn sustainable).

Check out the complete list to see how other popular beverages like Red Bull, Tropicana and Pepsi ranked!
